Adult Formation Classes

2011 Schedule

Eating:  Meeting with God
November 6, 13, 20, 27
9 am, Southgate 104
Teacher(s):  Rev. Dean Miller
Register below.
  • Meeting with God is the most important habit for spiritual health that we can have in any stage of our life with Jesus.  In this class we will spend time learning how to study the Bible, how to interact with God about the condition of our spiritual life and explore different ways to pray.
Exercise:  Practicing the Inner Spiritual Disciplines
November 6, 13, 20, 27
9 am, Southgate 106
Teacher(s): Rev. Bill Haley and Wade Ballou
Register below.
  • Fundamentally, any spiritual discipline is about creating space to be with God and be changed by God.   Some of these are more obvious than others, like "The Inner Disciplines" which are concerned with our interaction with God without reference to any other person.   Without them, God will feel elusive and far off, and without them we will not grow.   This course will experientially explore the inner disciplines, such as prayer, engaging scripture through lectio divina, fasting, and others like silence and solitude.
Loving:  Raising Children of Character
November 6, 13, 20
5:00 – 6:30pm, Main Sanctuary
Teachers:  John and Susan Yates
Register below.
  • Got KIDS? Then you've got QUESTIONS on how to raise them well in our 24-7 culture.  Come join John and Susan Yates as they share practical advice about how to help our kids grow into healthy, character-filled men and women.  Spend 3 Sunday evenings at the Falls Church with other parents, just like you, listening, learning and sharing about parenting in today's world.
  • Audio recordings available here.
Exercise: Vocation is Mission
September 28, October 19, November 16, December 14
7:00 – 9:00 pm, Historic Church
Teacher(s):  The Washington Institute
No registration necessary, for more information, click here.
  • Vocation is integral–not incidental–to the mission of God in the world, despite the pervasive, popular notion that there is a difference between “sacred” and “secular” callings.   This distinction is dangerous and it keeps too many people from living joyfully in their work with the knowledge that what they’re doing Monday-Friday matters as deeply to God as what they do on Sunday.  Ordinary work, rightly understood and practiced, is as important to God’s work in the world as pastoring, missionary work, evangelism, and so-called ‘full-time ministry’.
Exercise:  Foundations of Faith (Confirmation Prep Course)
January 8 – February 26 (8 weeks)
9:00 – 10:30am, Southgate 104
Teachers:  Rev Dean Miller and others
Register here by 12/31/11.

Eating: Verse by Verse
Every Sunday including holiday weekends (ongoing)
9:15 am, Southgate 102
Facilitator: Richard Eldridge
No Registration necessary.
  • Explore and discuss the rich and wonderful books of The Bible, verse by verse. We immerse ourselves in one book at a time over an extended period, and each time we finish a study, the class decides what book to explore next. Previous studies have included the Pauline Letters, John, Samuel I, and Samuel II. Join us to dig deeply in the Bible.
Eating: In the Word
Every Sunday (ongoing)
10:45 am, Choir Room (lower level of Main Sanctuary building)
Facilitator(s): Rick Campanelli, Rich Dean & Dr. Vern Grose
No Registration necessary.
  • We are an ongoing, adult class featuring Bible study, discussion, fellowship, refreshments, and song. The class is open to those who would like to stop on by for a Sunday or join us for the season. We will be studying The Corinthian Letters. This extended series examines Paul’s letters to the church in Corinth living in a culture that parallels America’s today—materially prosperous, intellectually alert, and morally corrupt; driven by pervasive licentiousness, family dissolution, and religious confusion. That culture may seem to be decaying, as it certainly did in Paul's day, but in fact, from an eternal perspective, it is a candidate for redemption.
Breathing: Healing Prayer Hour
Sunday mornings, starting September 18, 2011

  • Join us to pray for each other! Jesus shows up! This class is usually very small, which allows us to pray for individuals in depth. It is a wonderful place to receive prayer and to learn by doing.
